Stop Swaying In Your Golf Swing

I want to talk about lateral sway in your golf swing. I know it was a big problem I had for a long time and it felt like it took forever for me to fix it. But now that I’ve got some good feelings and some thoughts, I want to relay them to you so that you can fix it a lot quicker than I did.

Lateral Sway – Upper Body Or Lower Body

So a lateral sway can be in two parts of your body. Obviously it can be in the upper body where you sway off the ball and it can also be in the lower body where you swaying – your lower body, your knees are moving outside too much. That’s the part of the body I want to talk about today, the lower body.

So what happens here is when you get to address, your legs are kind of at an angle. You can see this angle here. I want you to focus on your right knee if you’re a right-handed golfer. That right knee should not move. It can rotate a little bit, but it should not move outside of where it’s at here.

Use A Club

So if you watch me in the video, and I hit that club, I just moved off the ball three inches. Anytime you do something in the back swing, that’s an extra movement, you have to undo it in the down swing. So you’re adding more complication to your golf swing.

So a good tip to think of is that when you’re rotating back, really think of having a still right knee like really solid. So when you make that back swing, look at my right knee here, when I make it, I feel like I’m kind of in a squat position and I’m not going to let that kneecap move at all. My leg can rotate as my hip rotates backwards but it’s not going to move to the side.

Here’s The Feeling

The thought in your head and the feeling you’re going to have is that right knee rock solid, not moving at all. And you can start this drill or use this tip with partial shots until you’re comfortable with it, then you can make a full swing. So again, as you’re going back, that right knee is not moving at all, it’s staying right there. Think of that and that’s going to really help your golf swing.

Fast Way To Fix Your Sway

Now I want to show you a training aid that can correct this swing fault. The leg strap does not allow my right leg to move out to the side at all, therefore automatically fixing your lateral swing and your golf swing.

Even if you’re not at the golf range, you could do this in your home so those of you that may be during the winter months or snowed in, you can put this on in your garage. The neat thing to do would be to do it in front of a mirror. That way you can really see how it’s correcting that lateral sway. So again if you watch me here, it’s really neat because it’s a very firm strap here between my legs. So there is no way my leg can move laterally to the side.

And for those of you who sway in your golf swing, it’s going to feel very different to you when you have this leg strap aid on because the minute you go back, you’re going to feel what I talked about earlier in this video, that you cannot move and you should not move laterally with your right leg.

So again, you just put this strap on and you can hit balls with it, too. Put the strap on, when you start rotating back, you see that that leg stays in the exact position that it’s supposed to be in. And the more you use this training aid, the more it’s going to ingrain the proper feel in your body and before you know it you’re not going to have a lateral sway in your golf swing anymore.
